Gardner attended Martin Luther King High School in Detroit. He was a wide receiver and cornerback in high school.
Prior to his senior year in 2018, 247Sports ranked Gardner as one of the top five players in his class in Michigan.
Gardner started 11 games as a true freshman last season. He racked up 31 tackles and three interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns.
He also has 11 pass deflections and 11 pass breakups.
Gardner was the only true freshman to be named to the first team of the All-American Conference following the season. Gardner was a sophomore when the 2020 season began, and he was at the top of the depth chart. Gardner declared for the NFL Draft in 2022 after the season.
