In the opening round of the 2022 Home Run Derby, former St. Louis Cardinals star and NL All-Star Albert Pujols defeated Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber in a swing-off.
Despite Schwarber having more time to hit, Pujols and Schwarber tied for first-phase honors with 13 home runs. Additionally, Pujols faced a number of pitches, which left him vulnerable and appeared to be an easy loss.
Following his round, Pujols was given a standing ovation as the other players recognized his contribution to the game and his Hall of Fame career.
We don’t know if that had any effect on Schwarber’s performance because he started out a little slowly before catching up to Pujols. Pujols hit a string of consecutive home runs in the swing off to put some space between himself and Schwarber.
The Phillies star struggled to get going and fell one home run shy of triggering another chance for sudden death.
