Alison Hewson (born March 23, 1961) is a businesswoman and activist from Ireland. Hewson is the wife of Bono, the lead singer, and guitarist for the rock band U2. Hewson was raised in Raheny and met her future husband there when she was 12 years old. They wed in 1982. Hewson graduated from University College, Dublin (UCD) with a degree in politics and sociology in 1989. The couple lives in homes in Ireland, France, and the United States and has four kids altogether. Hewson served as inspiration for a number of U2 songs, most notably “Sweetest Thing.”
In the 1990s, Hewson became involved in anti-nuclear activism. Hewson narrated Black Wind, White Land, an Irish documentary about the long-term effects of the Chornobyl disaster that was released in 1993, and she collaborated with activist Adi Roche. Hewson has been a patron of Chornobyl Children’s Project International since 1994 and has taken part in several aid missions to Belarus’ high-radiation exclusion zones. Hewson has also advocated against Sellafield, the nuclear facility in northern England.
