Dennis Graham is an African-American Catholic from Memphis, Tennessee who worked as a drummer for country musician Jerry Lee Lewis. Sandra “Sandi” Graham (née Sher), his mother, is a Canadian of Ashkenazi Jewish descent who worked as an English teacher and florist. Sandra was in the audience when Graham performed at Club Bluenote in Toronto. Drake was born in Canada and holds dual citizenship with the United States and Canada. He was raised Jewish and completed his bar mitzvah while attending a Jewish day school.
Drake was introduced to an acting agent’s father by a high school friend’s father when he was 15 years old. Drake landed a role on the Canadian teen drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation thanks to his agent. Drake played Jimmy Brooks, a basketball star who was shot by a classmate and became physically disabled as a result. Drake reportedly disliked this character arc because of its obvious tokenism (he was one of the series’ only black characters), and he also believed it would harm his reputation as a rapper. Longtime series writer James Hurst stated that Drake threatened to sue to rewrite the storyline before agreeing to it.
