Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson t will probably miss the rest of the regular season and will have surgery on his shoulder the following week, Jim Irsay, the team owner, revealed to ESPN on Monday.

The Colts’ Week 5 victory over the Tennessee Titans included Richardson, who was taken fourth overall in this year’s draft, suffering an AC joint injury in his right (throwing) shoulder during the second quarter.

In the week following the injury, the Colts have sought out multiple medical opinions to determine the best course of action. According to Irsay, the assessments are leaning toward a specific direction.

“The most likely scenario is that he’s probably going to be out for the year,” Irsay said. “I mean, it’s not definite but [he] probably misses this year and we’re going to have to contend with that factor.”

One of the choices that needs to be made is whether surgery is necessary for Richardson’s injury, or if therapy alone could be sufficient. Surgery seems to be the more likely course of action, according to Irsay.

“There’s a discussion underway, but it’s leaning towards surgery in the next week or so,” Irsay said. “We’re currently in the process of determining the exact how, when, and what we want to do, taking into account Anthony’s preferences as well.”

Irsay stressed that Richardson’s preference is given a lot of weight in this decision-making process. Though most players follow medical advice, Richardson and his advisors will ultimately have the last say. The team is taking the injury to Richardson very seriously because they understand how important it is to the team’s long-term future.

The Colts lost 37-20 to the Jacksonville Jaguars last Sunday, their first loss since Richardson was put on injured reserve. They now have a 3-3 record, and in Week 7, they will play the Cleveland Browns.
