Archibald William Roach AM, an Aboriginal Australian musician, lived from 8 January 1956 to 30 July 2022. He was an advocate for the rights of Indigenous Australians as well as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and elder of the Gunditjmara and Bundjalung tribes. Ruby Hunter, a vocalist, served as his spouse and musical partner (1955–2010). Over the course of his three-decade career, Roach performed extensively on tour, both as the headliner and as the opener for artists including Joan Armatrading, Bob Dylan, Billy Bragg, Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega, and Patti Smith. The song “Took the Children Away,” which was on Roach’s 1990 debut solo album Charcoal Lane, is what first made him popular. Numerous nominations and prizes have recognized his work, including the 2013 Deadly Award for “Lifetime Contribution to Healing the Stolen Generations.” Roach was admitted into the ARIA Music Awards’ hall of fame on November 25, 2020, during the ceremony.
