Archie Roach, an indigenous Australian singer-songwriter, musician, and novelist, is well-known for his song “Took the Children Away,” which tells the horrific tale of his own childhood and educates listeners about one of Australia’s worst periods in history. Roach died at the age of 66.
On February 17, 2010, Ruby Hunter, Roach’s wife and a fellow musician, died at the age of 54.
On October 14, 2010, Roach had a stroke while performing work in the Kimberley area. After recovering, he started giving live performances again in April 2011. He also beat lung cancer thanks to an early diagnosis in 2011 and intensive surgery. As a senior elder, he was respected by his people.
Archibald William Roach AM, an Aboriginal Australian musician, was born on January 8, 1956, and died on July 30, 2022. He was an advocate for Indigenous Australians’ rights, as well as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and elder of the Gunditjmara and Bundjalung tribes.
