Nala is a fictional character from the Disney film series The Lion King. The Lion King, an animated film from 1994, featured Nala for the first time. She then appeared in The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride (1998) and The Lion King 112 (2004) as a cameo, and she also appeared frequently in The Lion Guard (2015–2019).
In the first film, American actress Moira Kelly portrays the older Nala. Young Nala is spoken by actress Niketa Calame, and young and adult Nala’s singing is performed by vocalists Laura Williams and Sally Dworsky, respectively.
Nala, from The Lion King, is the most significant female figure. Although Ophelia from Hamlet is often compared to Nala from The Lion King, since the film is based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Hamlet, there are still differences between the two.
Numerous initial concepts for Nala were later abandoned, including the notions of her having a sister and father as well as Scar pursuing her romantically. Despite the relatively unfavourable critiques Nala has received, Kelly’s vocal performance has won praise.
Nala makes a cameo in the Broadway musical version of the film when she was originally performed by singer Heather Headley. And in the television series The Lion Guard, Gabrielle Union replaces Kelly as Nala’s voice.
