August Floyd Coppola, was an American professor, novelist, film executive, and advocate of the arts, who was born on February 16, 1934.

He was the father of actor Nicolas Cage, radio DJ Marc Coppola, and director Christopher Coppola. He was also the brother of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and actress Talia Shire.

In 1956, Coppola’s thesis, Ernest Hemingway: The Problem of In Our Time, which he wrote as a doctoral student at Hofstra University, was published. However, he got his undergraduate degree from UCLA. At Occidental College, he received his doctorate in 1960.

August Floyd Coppola, worked as a trustee for the California State University system and taught comparative literature at Cal State Long Beach in 1960 and 1970, before relocating to San Francisco in 1984. Later on, he worked as San Francisco State University’s Dean of Creative Arts. In this capacity, Coppola developed a reputation as a supporter of the arts on campus and in the community, as well as for encouraging diversity among the arts school’s enrolees.
