Bella Heather, a 5-year-old child missing from Eugene, Oregon, has gone viral in recent Facebook posts. She is thought to have gone missing for several days, and the posts seek help in finding her by spreading the word. This, however, is a phishing scam intended to distribute malware and collect personal information.

After the posters have been extensively distributed, the scammers made them replace the missing child information with content providing surveys, employment opportunities, and other viral posts.

The affiliate links in these recent posts either allow you to visit phishing websites where your login information is stolen, download malware, or browse dubious quizzes and forms where third parties can steal your personal information.

The Bella Heather hoax posts follow a similar style to earlier, better-known hoaxes about missing children, such as the Tyler Griffin case. Readers are usually urged to provide urgent information about the reportedly kidnapped child in the letters.

Once the post has received enough views and attention, the con artists alter it to promote surveys, dubious links, or dubious rental advertising. These just-launched websites and links contain malware and are meant to steal personal information.

The posts are created with the purpose of evoking viewers’ emotions and getting viral before becoming phishing content. More prospective victims can now access the URLs as a result of this.
