Bill Russell was born on February 12, 1934. Russell had a hard time honing his basketball abilities in his early years. Russell was cut from the Herbert Hoover Junior High School squad despite having huge hands, being a terrific runner and jumper, and having an excellent understanding of the game. Russell nearly was cut again as a freshman at McClymonds High School in Oakland, but coach George Powles urged him to focus on his basics after noticing Russell’s untapped physical potential.

With his first marriage, Russell had three kids: two sons and a girl. William Russell Sr. and Jacob are his sons, while Karen Russell, a television pundit and attorney, is his daughter.

Siblings
The renowned dramatist Charlie L. Russell was his older brother. His most well-known work was the play Five on the Black Hand Side, which was later adapted into a critically praised movie. After a fight with stomach cancer, he died in 2013.
