Russell was the first NBA player to travel to Africa in 1959. While a student at the University of San Francisco, Russell was initiated into the Gamma Alpha chapter of the fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi. Russell was detained on October 16, 2013, at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport for possessing a loaded, registered.38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver. He was given a ticket and let go, and the Transportation Security Administration said it would impose a civil fine of between $3,000 and $7,500.
