In the National Basketball Association (NBA), William Felton Russell represented the United States as a center for the Boston Celtics from 1956 until 1969.

 

On February 12, 1934, he was born, and on July 31, 2022, he passed away. He played professionally from 1956 to 1969.

 

In his 13-year career, the Celtics dynasty, which won 11 NBA championships, was built around him. He received five NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards and twelve NBA All-Star nominations.

 

Russell is regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time by experts. At the 1956 Summer Olympics, he led the American basketball team to a gold medal in the men’s division, and he also led the San Francisco Dons to back-to-back NCAA titles in 1955 and 1956.

 

Russell was married to his college love, Rose Swisher, from 1956 to 1973. Their three children were Karen Russell, a television pundit and lawyer, and sons William Jr. and Jacob.

 

The couple separated emotionally and divorced. In 1977, he married Dorothy Anstett, Miss USA 1968, and they divorced in 1980.

 

Russell married Marilyn Nault, his third wife, in 1996; they were married until her death in January 2009. Russell died while married to Jeannine Russell.

 

He had lived on Washington’s Mercer Island for nearly four decades. His older brother was well-known dramatist Charlie L. Russell.
