The Northern Ireland international footballer and football manager, born on August 5, 1931, had scored 133 goals in 525 appearances in all domestic competitions.

Between 1951 and 1963, he received 56 caps for Northern Ireland, scoring 10 international goals.

His playing career was as illustrious as his managerial career.

After leading the “Sandgrounders” to promotion from the Fourth Division, he was appointed manager of Northern Ireland two years later.

During his time as an international manager, he took over at Plymouth Argyle, then at Linfield, where he led them to a quadruple in 1970–71, his only season in charge.

Mr. Bingham went to Elmgrove Primary School and was appointed captain of the school’s football team, as well as being selected for the Northern Ireland schoolboy games.

According to reports, Billy Bingham died of percussive dementia, a condition common among boxers, football players, and rugby players.

Linfield FC issued the following statement: “Linfield FC records with sadness the passing of our legendary former manager, Billy Bingham MBE” (aged 90).
