1950 saw the birth of Parsons in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He enrolled at Penn State and began his career as the third-string quarterback for the Nittany Lions.
He remained on the depth chart as a backup signal-caller for most of his career.
However, Parsons’ fortunes altered in 1971 when Joe Paterno started John Hufnagel at quarterback and switched him to tight end.
The 6-foot-4, 234-pounder had a stellar senior season there, catching 30 catches for 489 yards and five scores.
He made a crucial reception in the team’s 30-6 Cotton Bowl victory over Texas that year, which resulted in a Penn State score.
The Chicago Bears later selected Parsons in the fifth round of the 1972 selection, 117th overall, and he went on to have a successful career.
He was a backup who made the squad, and in his debut game for a living, he did manage to score a touchdown.
The next season, he joined the Bears as a backup tight end.
