Argentine radio and television star Jorge “Cacho” Fontana (born Norberto Palese Filgueiras; April 23, 1932 – July 5, 2022) passed away in 2022.

He was the lone child of Nieves Filgueiras and Antonio Palese and was born Norberto Palese in the Barracas neighbourhood of Buenos Aires.

At the age of sixteen, Jorge Loguarro, a friend and coworker who also performed on stage, invited him to do the same at the Salón Argentino on Corrientes Avenue.

This was the beginning of his career in show business. Jorge “Cacho” Fontana became the young man’s stage moniker after the corporation engaged Palese to host their travelling performance.

He made his radio debut in Argentina in 1950 after meeting radio presenter Roberto González Rivero (a.k.a. “Riverito”) by accident at the Huracán Stadium, which led to his employment as an announcer on Riverito’s Pea de tango, on Radio del Pueblo.

Later, he worked as a sportscaster with Chacarita Juniors and alongside radio theatre host Julio César Barton.

As a stand-in for host Jaime Font Saravia in El Relámpago (“The Thunderbolt”), where Tita Merello and Luis Sandrini starred under the direction of Miguel Coronatto Paz, he got to know Argentine comedy greats Tita Merello and Luis Sandrini.

Merello and Sandrini were featured under the direction of Carlos Carella, who started a career in film. Fontana was eventually given a permanent position by Coronatto Paz.
