Candy Montgomery born Candy Wheeler is a well-known and skilled American homemaker. Candy met her best friend Betty Gore at their local place of worship, the Methodist Church of Lucas, both were 30 years at the period with young children.

Candy was believed to be a pillar of her community, but, their perception changed after she had an affair with her friend’s husband and killed her friend with an axe.

Betty was born in 1950, she grew up an Army brat, moving from base to base throughout her childhood.

Candy tied the knot with a man named Pat Montgomery in 1970, Pat worked as an electrical engineer at Texas Instruments. The Montgomerys moved to Collin County, Texas. Betty Gore was a teacher at a local school system.

They had two children, a son and a daughter. In 1979, Betty gave birth to her second child, Bethany. Afterwards, she suffered from postpartum depression, putting a strain on her marriage.

Candy Montgomery was accused of killing her lover’s wife, Betty Gore, who was a kindergarten teacher who was born in a small Kansas town and moved to Texas with her family when she was a child.

The murder took place in Wylie, Texas, on June 13, 1980. Before the murder Candy spoke to Betty about her affair with Allan.

Betty was shattered, Candy claims that they had a fight and Betty brought out an axe and hit her foot, Candy argued that she fought back in self-defence. Betty was hit 41 times with the axe. The two friends appeared fine months before Gore’s murder.

Montgomery was represented by defence attorney Robert Udashen. The trial proceeded for eight days in McKinney.

The jury was comprised of nine women and three men, before the end of the prosecution, Montgomery pleaded self-defence arguing that she had attacked Gore to defend herself after she confronted Betty about her affair with her husband, Allan.

She confessed that she was required to use an axe after Gore had tried to strike her times before with the same weapon. Montgomery went through a polygraph test before the trial, which specified that she was credible.

District attorney Tom O’Connell claimed that Montgomery could have fled the scene instead of attacking Gore. He also argued that striking 41 times was disproportionate.

District Judge Tom Ryan was ordained to preside over the case. Montgomery was found not guilty on October 30, 1980.
