Although predominantly a running back, his versatility allowed him to play quarterback, defensive back, punter, and return specialist during his career. Trippi was a “quad-threat” player who could run, catch, throw, punt, and defend.
Trippi attended the University of Georgia, where he played collegiate football for the Georgia Bulldogs from 1942 through 1946, with a break in 1944 for military service during World War II.
As a sophomore, he led Georgia to a Rose Bowl win and was awarded the game’s most valuable player.
As a senior in 1946, he received the Maxwell Award as the nation’s best collegiate football player, was selected Southeastern Conference player of the year, and was unanimously chosen first-team All-America.
