Rooney was born Joseph Yule Jr. on September 23, 1920, in the Brooklyn district of New York City, the only child of Nellie W. Carter and Joe Yule.

When he was only three months old, his Scottish-born vaudevillian father moved to New York from Glasgow with his family.

His mother was a burlesque performer and former chorus girl from Kansas City, Missouri. They lived in the Greenpoint neighbourhood of Brooklyn.

Actor Mickey Rooney was American. He was one of the last silent-film stars still alive, having featured in more than 300 movies over the course of a nine-decade career.

From 1939 until 1941, he was the top box office draw and one of the highest-paid actors in history.

He made 43 pictures during the height of his career, which spanned the ages of 15 to 25, and was one of MGM’s most consistently lucrative actors.

He was a talented performer who later in his career rose to fame as a beloved character actor. Rooney was once referred to as “the best there has ever been” by Laurence Olivier.

Rooney was described as “the closest thing to a genius” by Clarence Brown, who directed him in two of his earliest dramatic roles in National Velvet and The Human Comedy.

For playing the title character in the television film Bill, he won a 1982 Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award the following year, and an Academy Honorary Award.
