Scarver murdered Dahmer and Anderson using a 20-inch (51-cm) metal rod he stole from a piece of exercise equipment in the prison gym. Both Dahmer and Anderson died as a result of their wounds. Scarver was sentenced to two extra life sentences for the murders.
Scarver grew up as the second of five children in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Scarver was a student when he graduated from James Madison High School in the eleventh grade. Scarver worked as a trainee carpenter for the Wisconsin Conservation Corps labor program.
Scarver stated that a supervisor called Edward Patts promised him full-time employment after finishing this program, but once Patts was sacked, Scarver’s full-time position never materialized. His mother ultimately forced him to leave.
