At Marietta High School in Georgia, he participated in baseball and basketball as a two-sport varsity player. Swanson averaged 14 points per game and shot three-point field goals at a 44 percent clip for the Marietta Blue Devils basketball team in his senior year. With 165 three-pointers in his three-year varsity basketball career, he earned the moniker “Three-point Swanson.” At Haarlem Baseball Week in the Netherlands in 2014, Swanson represented USA Baseball. Swanson had a.458 hitting average in 24 at-bats through his first six starts, which was the best on the team. Swanson participated in the US team’s Cuban tour, when they were swept by the host team, after the US team defeated Japan 6-3 to claim the gold medal. He participated in 66 at-bats for Team USA and had a.288 batting average to place second on the team.
