After his major contribution to the success of the Rangers football club in the early 1960s, he became a household name and one of the best footballers who have played for the team.
He said he was a Rangers fan since infancy. He had suffered rejection from the Junior club, Cambuslang Rangers due to his smallish body appearance, and was left with no option to begin his career at Baillieston.
As a result of his applaudable performance, he was signed to his dream club in 1956. He made his first appearance for Rangers on 2 January 1957, just before his 18th birthday.
Wilson departed from Ibrox aged 30, having scored a total of 159 goals in 382 matches in all competitions.
In 1967, Wilson signed a new contract with Dundee United along with his teammates Millar and Wilson Wood. He played four seasons and made a total of 150 appearances.
After several good performances he showed up, and he became part of the Dundee Hall of fame in 2017.
Wilson moved to Dumbarton in January 1972 and helped the club win promotion at the end of that season.
He retired as a player at the end of the following campaign in 1973, aged 36, after helping Dumbarton maintain its status in the top division; he thereafter took over as the team’s manager.
