After graduating from Calistoga High School in 1954, Vermeil enrolled at Napa Junior College (now Napa Valley College). He transferred to San Jose State University after spending two years at Napa (now University).
He was a quarterback for the football team at Calistoga High School when he was a teenager and worked at his father’s auto repair shop.
Before taking over as the starter in 1957, Vermeil played one season as the San Jose State Spartans’ backup quarterback in 1956. On a 3-7 team, he threw for 580 yards, one touchdown, and nine interceptions.
Before joining the NFL, he served as the football coach at Hillsdale High School from 1960 to 1962, Napa Junior College in 1964, and UCLA from 1974 to 1975.
