A former National Football League head coach, Dick Vermeil, helmed his team for a total of 15 seasons during his whole career.

His seven-year tenure as a head coach, the first of which he spent with the Philadelphia Eagles, was the longest of his career. After that, he played for seven seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and three seasons with the St. Louis Rams before calling it quits on the game of football for good.

Vermeil grew up in Calistoga, California, and now calls it home. He was the last in a family of four children. He played quarterback for his high school football team and worked at his father’s auto repair shop while still in high school.

During his time at Napa Junior College, he competed for his younger brother Al’s team. From 1965 until 1968, Vermeil was an assistant coach at Stanford University under the direction of John Ralston.

The Philadelphia Eagles, who had a record of 4-10 the year before Vermeil took over as head coach in 1976, had a losing record in the previous season.

As a consequence of previous transactions completed by the Eagles, Vermeil’s clubs did not possess a first-round pick until the year 1979.
