The National Football League’s Dick Vermeil served as a head coach for a total of 15 seasons over his whole career.

His coaching career spanned seven years, starting with the Philadelphia Eagles, followed by five seasons in Kansas City and three seasons in St. Louis before he chose to call it quits.

Vermeil was born and raised in Calistoga, California. He was the fourth and last child of four. While he was in high school, he played quarterback and worked at his father’s auto repair shop.

Vermeil went to Napa Junior College after he got his diploma from Calistoga High School in 1954. (now Napa Valley College).

After two years at Napa Valley College, he moved on to San Jose State College (now University). Vermeil was the backup quarterback for the 1956 San Jose State Spartans football team.

He threw for 580 yards, one touchdown, and nine picks. The Spartans went 3–7 when he was in charge.
