Dan Snyder was born in Maryland on November 23, 1964, to Arlette and Gerald Seymour “Gerry” Snyder. His parents are Jewish. His father was a freelance writer who worked for Associated Press and National Geographic. In Silver Spring, Maryland, dan Snyder attended Hillandale Elementary School. Snyder moved to Henley-on-Thames, a small town near London, when he was 12, to attend a private school. Snyder returned to the United States at the age of 14 and lived with his grandmother in Queens, New York. His family returned to Maryland a year later, and he graduated from Charles W. Woodward High School in Rockville, Maryland. His first job was at the White Flint Mall’s B. Dalton bookstore.

Snyder and his sister Michele established a wallboard advertising company in 1989 with seed money from his father, who took out a second mortgage on his property in England, and his sister, who maxed out her credit cards at $35,000. They focused on doctors’ offices (where there was a captive audience) and colleges. To differentiate themselves from their competitors, they combined advertisements with the distribution of product samples, such as soaps and medicine packages.
