Swanson, who was born in Kennesaw, Georgia, to parents who were both former Troy University athletes, was a lifelong Braves fan. At Marietta High School, he participated in two sports, earning the moniker “Three-point Swanson” for his basketball prowess. Swanson was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 38th round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of high school, but he decided not to sign, instead choosing to play college baseball for the Vanderbilt Commodores. Due to injuries, he missed the majority of his freshman season, but as Vanderbilt’s starting second baseman, he had a breakout sophomore campaign. That year, the Commodores won their first-ever national championship, and Swanson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2014 College World Series. In 2015, after switching back to shortstop, he took home the Brooks Wallace Award for being the best shortstop in collegiate baseball.

A batting helmet that rose off the ground as the Braves celebrated outfielder Eddie Rosario’s walk-off victory in Game 2 actually caused it, contrary to popular belief that it was the result of a head-first slide into third base earlier in the series. Swanson has continued to play his nightly position for Atlanta despite these types of celebratory injuries, which must be seen to be believed.
