He played football in college for the Oregon Ducks, winning the Pac-12 championship in 2019 and the Rose Bowl MVP award in 2020. At the 2020 NFL Draft, the Chargers made him their sixth-overall pick.
Herbert, who was classified as QB2 on the depth chart entering his true freshman season, began at quarterback for Oregon for the first time since Chris Miller in 1983 on October 8, 2016, when the Ducks played Washington.

Despite Herbert setting or matching Oregon’s single-game records for passing yards (489), touchdown passes (6), and total offensive yards, the Ducks concluded the season with their worst record in 25 years, going 4-8. They also missed out on a bowl game for the first time in more than ten years (512).
