Wadlow was created in the city of Alton, Illinois. Harold Franklin and Addie May Wadlow were the parents of Robert Pershing Wadlow. He was the oldest of five children and has four other siblings.

By the time he was eight years old, he was taller than his father, and in the first grade, he was given a special desk. He was 8 feet 4 inches tall when he graduated from Alton High School in 1936. (254 cm). At Shurtleff College, he made the decision to pursue a legal education.

Wadlow surpassed John Rogan as the tallest man ever a year before his passing. On June 27, 1940, 18 days before he went away, doctors measured his height. He stood at 8 feet, 11.1 inches (2.72 m).

A casket that was 10.9 feet (3.28 meters), 2.80 feet (0.81 meters), and 2.76 feet (0.76 meters) deep was used to hold him during his burial. Twelve pallbearers and eight assistants carried the almost 1,000 lb (450 kilograms) coffin. In the Madison County, Illinois community of Upper Alton, he was laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery.
