Radiation poisoning landed Kovtun in the hospital as well. He was a childhood friend and classmate of Andrey Lugovoy.

They were tasked with protecting top Kremlin officials while attending the elite Soviet military command academy in Moscow in the 1980s.

Kovtun was born and raised in a military family. The names of his parents, on the other hand, are unknown.

He was sent to Hamburg, Germany, on December 1, 2006, to meet with FSB defector Alexander Litvinenko, where he planted polonium in Litvinenko’s car and apartment.

Litvinenko died on the 23rd, and after polonium traces were discovered in his own apartment, Kovtun became ill as well.

On his messaging app channel, Russian lawmaker Andrei Lugovoi, who was also charged by the UK with the assassination of the spy, announced Kovtun’s death.

Kovtun died of a COVID-19-induced illness on Saturday, according to Lugovoi. According to Russian news reports, he died in a Moscow hospital.

Mr. Kovtun, who was 57 years old at the time, died on June 4th, 2022.
