Due to radiation poisoning, Kovtun was also admitted to the hospital. He was a childhood friend and classmate of Andrey Lugovoy.

 

They were tasked with protecting top Kremlin officials during their time at the elite Soviet military command academy in Moscow in the 1980s.

 

On December 1, 2006, he was dispatched to Hamburg, Germany, to meet with FSB defector Alexander Litvinenko, and planted polonium in Litvinenko’s car and apartment.

 

Litvinenko died on the 23rd, and Kovtun became ill after polonium traces were discovered in his own apartment.

According to a Russian lawmaker, a key Russian suspect in the 2006 assassination in Britain of dissident former Russian agent Alexander Litvinenko died after contracting Covid-19.

 

“Sad news. My close and loyal friend Dmitry Kovtun has suddenly died following a grave illness linked to a coronavirus infection,” said Andrei Lugovoi, a member of the lower house of the Russian parliament who was also accused in the case.

 

“It is a terrible and irreparable loss,” he said in a statement.
