Carnegie was born on a farm in Missouri into poverty. He participated in debate clubs both in high school and college. He taught public speaking at the YMCA and worked as a salesman in Nebraska and as an actor in New York City after graduating. His classes turned out to find actual success, and Carnegie started addressing stuffed houses. Carnegie began publishing pamphlets to standardize his teaching methods, which he collected into a book Public Speaking: A Practical Course for Businessmen, published in 1926 as Public Speaking and Influencing Men in Business, also published). He also managed a lecture tour with Lowell Thomas and compiled Little Known Facts About Famous People during this time (1934).
