According to Rucker, Rucker’s father was never present, and he only saw him on Sundays before church. His father was a member of the gospel group The Traveling Echoes. Rucker has stated that he grew up in a regular Southern African-American family. Rucker’s family went to church every Sunday and was impoverished, with his mother, two sisters, his grandmother, and 14 children living in a three-bedroom house at one point. However, he claims to have good memories of his youth. L’Corine, Rucker’s sister, noted that singing had always been his dream.

Since the band’s inception in 1986, Darius Rucker has served as its main singer. While attending the University of South Carolina, Rucker met fellow band members Mark Bryan, Jim “Soni” Sonefeld, and Dean Felber.
