Carolyn, a nurse at the Medical University of South Carolina, raised him and his three sisters and two brothers as a single mother. Rucker has stated that he grew up in a regular Southern African-American family. Rucker’s family went to church every Sunday and was impoverished, with his mother, two sisters, his grandmother, and 14 children living in a three-bedroom house at one point.
