Gallagher was born on July 24, 1946, in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to an Irish and Croatian family. He lived in Lorain, Ohio, until the age of nine, when his family relocated to South Tampa, Florida, where he attended Henry B. Plant High School. In 1970, he earned a chemical engineering degree from the University of South Florida. He studied English literature as a minor.
Gallagher’s younger brother Ron approached him in the early 1990s, requesting permission to perform his trademark Sledge-O-Matic routine. Leo granted permission on the condition that Ron, who bore a striking resemblance to Leo, and his manager made it clear in promotional materials that the performer was Ron Gallagher, not Leo Gallagher. Ron usually performed in smaller venues than Leo Gallagher did. Ron began promoting his act as Gallagher Too or Gallagher Two after a number of years. In some cases, Ron’s act was promoted in such a way that the fact that he was not the original Gallagher was obscured. This, as well as Ron’s off-stage problems, tarnished Leo’s reputation.
