Leo Anthony Gallagher Jr., popularly known by his stage name Gallagher, was born on July 24, 1946, he is an American comedian, he became famous back in the 1980s for his prop and observational routine, which featured the hallmarking act of smashing a watermelon on stage with a sledgehammer. He performed between 100 and 200 shows every year for more than 30 years, smashing tens of thousands of melons with the sledgehammer, which he named the “Sledge-O-Matic.”
Gallagher started working as a comic/musician at Jim Stafford’s road, which he manages after graduating from college. Gallagher made the decision to become a performer while Stafford and Gallagher were on their 1969 trip to California. He frequented The Comic Store and The Ice House, where he started polishing his own comedy act. Although Johnny Carson detested prop humor, he appeared on The Tonight Show twice while Carson was the host. He debuted as a guest on the program on December 5, 1975, when he showed off his prop on, “The Tonight Show Home Game,” and he returned on May 9, 1979. He was featured as a guest on, The Mike Douglas Show and The Merv Griffin Show. He visited Playboy Clubs on multiple occasions.
