Donald Card was a security policeman in South Africa. Card was present in Duncan Village in 1953 and saw how, on that day Elsie Quinlan, who was Dominican nun, was brutally killed in the village.

After Quinlan’s murder, the police responded fiercely and they ended up killing up to 200 people involved in the rioting that led to Quinlan’s death. It was a very bloody day in the Duncan village.

In the year 2004, a memorable ceremony of reconciliation was held at the inauguration of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory Project.

Donald Card gave back to Nelson Mandela a total of 78 letters written by Mandela himself. The letters were previously unknown.

Donald Card had a popular quote that reads “One old man giving another old man two old books”

He was as well implicated in police brutality and torture in evidence given at the Truth and reconciliation commission in the year 1997.

He passed away in 2022, but the exact cause of death is not known.
