When Sister Kenny came across her first case of polio in 1911, she was not aware of the standard polio treatment, which involved immobilizing the damaged muscles with splints. Instead, she treated the disease’s symptoms using her knowledge of anatomy and common sense. Elizabeth died at age 72 in the year 1952.
