Elizabeth Kenny, an Australian nurse and health administrator, was born in Warialda, New South Wales, in 1880, the daughter of Australian-born Mary Kenny, née Moore, and Michael Kenny, an Irish farmer. Elizabeth was well-known for the Kenny method, an alternative approach to polio treatment. Her method differed from the then-standard medical practice of casting affected limbs in plaster. Instead, Kenny applied hot compresses to the affected areas of the patient’s bodies, followed by passive movement of those areas to reduce what Elizabeth referred to as “Spasm.” Kenny’s muscle rehabilitation principles became the foundation of physical therapy, also known as physiotherapy.
Elizabeth Kenny was born on September 20, 1880, in Warialda, New South Wales, Australia, as Sister Elizabeth Kenny or Sister Kenny. Her father, Michael Kenny, was an Irish farmer who had settled in Australia, and her mother, Mary Moore, was an Australian native. Her family nicknamed her “Lisa,” and Elizabeth was homeschooled by her mother before attending schools in Guyra, New South Wales, and Nobby, Queensland.
