Sister Elizabeth Kenny was known to be a self-trained bush nurse from Australia who came up with a procedure to treat polio which was at that time contentious. She was born on September 20, 1880. While working in Australia, the United States and Europe the procedure she developed, expanded internationally. It varied from the usual method of placing affected limbs in plaster casts, hers was to apply hotly compressed, proceeded by passive movements of the areas to relieve what she called “spasm”. Elizabeth’s precepts of muscle rehabilitation evolved into the basis of physical therapy or physiotherapy. In 1946, the story of her life was told in a film, Sister Kenny, where she was depicted by Rosalinda Russell and was nominated for Best Actress in the Academy Awards.

Elizabeth Kenny’s autopsy report

Elizabeth Kenny was diagnosed with Parkinson’s sickness and left for her hometown, Towoomba in 1951. She passed on 30 November 1952 of cerebrovascular disease at the age of 72. Autopsy reports of Elizabeth Kenny are not available.
