When Kenny was 17 years old, Kenny fell off a horse and broke her wrist. Her father brought her to Toowoomba physician Aeneas McDonnell, where Kenny stayed throughout her recovery. Kenny spent his time there studying McDonnell’s anatomy texts and skeleton model.
This started a lifelong friendship with McDonnell, who later became her mentor and advisor. Kenny later confirmed that Kenny became interested in muscle function while recuperating from her accident. Instead of using a model skeleton, which was only available to medical students, Kenny created her own. Kenny was certified as a teacher of religious instruction by the Secretary of Public Instruction after her time with McDonnell, and Kenny taught Sunday School in Rockfield. Kenny listed herself as a “music teacher” and did so a few hours per week after becoming a self-taught pianist.
