Sister Elizabeth Kenny (20 September 1880 – 30 November 1952) was a self-taught Australian bush nurse who pioneered a controversial method of treating polio. Her method, which Kenny promoted internationally while working in Australia, Europe, and the United States, differed from the traditional method of immobilizing affected limbs in plaster casts. Instead, Kenny used hot compresses followed by passive movement of the affected areas to reduce “spasm.” In such cases, her principles of muscle rehabilitation became the foundation of physical therapy or physiotherapy.

Kenny worked as a bush nurse after returning to Nobby in 1909, reaching her patients on foot or horseback. In November 1911, Kenny opened St. Canice’s Cottage Hospital in Clifton, where Kenny provided convalescent and midwifery services. In her 1943 autobiography, Kenny claimed that in 1911, under the supervision of Dr Horn, the local Lodge Doctor, Kenny treated what McDonnell thought was infantile paralysis. Sister Kenny, a 1946 film starring Rosalind Russell, romanticized the story.
