Eastern Michigan University (EMU) was hit with the tragedy of the news of the death of the University’s Football Assistant Coach, Fred Reed. He died at age 54 on May 8, 2022, after a medical emergency.
Reed has been in the coaching career for twenty-seven years which included twenty-five years at the college football level. He served as a coach in the National Football League from 2006 to 2007.
Reed was also EMU’s defensive pass game coordinator and safeties coach for seven years. He again was a Detroit Lions coaching staff. Reed mentored two-time AVCA All-American Ali Bastianelli and two-time All-Big Ten honoree Ashlyn Fleming.

Fred Reed was succeeded by his wife known as La’Shannon Reed. He had two children with his wife; who are Amar’e Reed and Khamara Reed. From sources, EMU Vice President and Director of Athletics, Scot Wetherbee described Fred Reed as “the ultimate model of a husband, father, friend and coach”.
