Fred Reed died on May 8, 2022, according to a death notice. Assistant Football Coach Fred Reed passed away at Eastern Michigan University.

He coached the school’s football team for 27 years, during which time he spent 25 years in college and two years in the NFL. Reed worked with the Detroit Lions’ safeties as a defensive assistant in 2006 and 2007.

“We are devastated to learn of Coach Reed’s demise,” said EMU Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee in a Facebook post confirming Reed’s death. “Fred was the epitome of what a spouse, parent, friend, and coach should be.

Our hearts break for his wife, La’Shannon, and his children, Amar’e and Khamara, as well as everybody who knew him. He will be missed greatly.”

Fred Reed, Emu Football Assistant Coach, died of natural causes. The cause of death of Eastern Michigan University’s former coach has not yet been made public.
