South Indian actress, former newsreader, and socialite Fathima Babu comes from Puducherry and currently resides in Chennai.

Born into a Muslim household, Fathima started her public career as a newsreader for DD Podhigai, the Tamil equivalent of Doordarshan news, for more than 25 years before moving on to work for Jaya TV.

For her husband, she later underwent a Hindu conversion. She later went on to work in Tamil and Malayalam-language theatre productions, movies, and television series.

In the late 1980s, Fathima started reading the news on DD Podhigai, Doordarshan’s Tamil equivalent. She briefly vanished in 1989, sparking a lot of rumours about where she might have gone.

Years later, Fathima explained that she was absent because she was filming for the television show Chithirapaavai and didn’t want to violate Doordarshan’s policy prohibiting news anchors from appearing in serials.

The Fab’s Theatre, which Fathima founded, produces plays for performances in Chennai. K. Balachander gave her her first theatre experience and frequently assisted her in writing and developing scripts.

The ensemble produced the Fathima-directed television programs Sethu Vandirikkaen and Thaarama Tallyaa, which debuted in February 2016.
