Married to seasoned team owner Sir Frank Williams, Virginia Williams passed away on March 7. She was 66 years old.
According to a March 8 press release from the Williams Formula One team, Lady Virginia, or “Ginny,” as she was more affectionately known, passed away quietly at the family home last night while being accompanied by Frank and the rest of the Williams family.
For the previous 2.5 years, Ginny had fought heroically against cancer.
“Ginny will always be a vital part of Williams’ history and achievement, and today we pay tribute to a much-loved member of the Williams family who will be terribly missed,” the statement reads.

In 1967, while Virginia Williams was engaged to a future F3 driver and employed as a receptionist, she first met Frank.
She started dating Frank after her marriage ran into difficulty, and after their divorce, they were married in a rushed ceremony that was squeezed in between races in August 1974.
She helped Frank through his challenging early years in F1 by quitting her job and even lending him money when she sold her London apartment before their marriage.
Her contributions to this cause went largely unrecognized.
