Since 2013, McGill University’s Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has selected academically talented young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa to receive a top-notch university education together with extensive support mechanisms to ensure their success.

The goal of the program is to establish the framework necessary for young people to lead transforming lives, transition into dignified and meaningful employment, and get an inclusive and appropriate education.

Aims of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program aims to produce a pool of highly qualified and globally educated future leaders who may return to Africa after graduation to support the continent’s development.

To achieve these goals, McGill provides Mastercard Foundation Scholars with an extensive network of support services, including community service activities, individualized support services, mentorship, and ongoing programming on their personal growth.

During their studies, Mastercard Foundation Scholars are also provided with funds and coaching for two internships in their home countries. Through these internships, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars hope to strengthen their ties to their home nations and pave the way for fulfilling careers after graduation.

Eligible Courses for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme

  • Biotechnology
  • Animal Scienceā€ Sustainable Agriculture
  • Bioresource Engineering-Environmental Engineering
  • Bioresource Engineering-Integrated Water Resource Management
  • Biostatistics
  • Foot Science and Agricultural Chemistry-Food Science
  • Food Science and Agricultural Chemistry-Food Safety
  • Human Nutrition: Project
  • Public Health
  • Public Policy (Maximum of 5 Scholars per year)

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, you need to fulfill the following requirements:

  • Be accepted into one of McGill University’s acceptable non-thesis programs.
  • Never enrolled in or finished any graduate-level coursework.
  • Possess citizenship in and reside in a country in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Possess a current passport and be eligible to enter Canada as an international student (study permit required).
  • Have an outstanding record of involvement and service in your community and/or school; intend to return home right away after earning your degree to bring about social and economic improvement in your town;
  • Age requirements are also a criterion to be selected for the scholars’ program. Applicants must note that at the time of application, you must be under 35.

People Not Eligible for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme

Students who can’t apply or are not eligible are those who hold dual citizenship or who are in the US, Canada, the UK, or the EU as refugees, asylees, or permanent residents.

Benefits

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme has several benefits since it is fully funded. McGill provides Scholars with a comprehensive support system that includes community service activities, individualized support services, mentorship, and ongoing programming that is relevant to their personal growth to complement their studies.

Additionally, during their studies, scholars get financing and supervision for two internships in their home countries. These internships are intended to strengthen the Scholars’ ties to their native countries and pave the way for fulfilling careers after graduation.
