Cappelletti, dubbed “The Duke,” was a Patriots receiver and kicker who scored the first regular-season points in AFL history with a 35-yard field goal in the first quarter of the team’s 13-10 loss against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 9, 1960.
He was voted the AFL MVP in 1964, along with Jim Otto and George Blanda, and was one of just three players to appear in every game throughout the league’s 10-year history.
Cappelletti spent his entire career in Boston, from 1960 to 1970, and finished as the AFL’s all-time leader in points (1,100) and field goals (48). (170). He became the second Patriots player to be inducted into the team’s hall of fame in 1992, after guard John Hannah.

Gino Cappelletti, the founding member of the Boston Patriots and a former AFL Most Valuable Player, has died. He was a player, coach, and analyst for the team for five decades. He was 89.
Cappelletti died on Thursday at his home in Wellesley, Massachusetts. The cause of death was never mentioned. The cause of Gino’s death was not disclosed by the New England Patriots.
He is survived by his wife Sandy, daughters Gina, Cara, and Christina, and eleven grandchildren.
