De Arrascaeta made his debut for Defensor Sporting in the Uruguayan Primera División in October 2012, just four months after turning 18. His impressive performances for Defensorduring the 2014 Copa Libertadores, where they reached the semi-finals, caught the attention of Brazilian champions Cruzeiro.
On 17 January 2015, Cruzeiro secured the signing of de Arrascaeta by agreeing to pay €4 million (R$12 million) for 50% of his economic rights. In the 2019 preseason, Flamengobegan showed interest in de Arrascaeta. However, on 3 January 2019, he failed to attend training sessions after the summer break in an attempt to force his exit from Cruzeiro.
Due to receiving numerous insults, representatives from Cruzeiro and Flamengo travelled to Uruguay on 7 January 2019 to resolve the issue. The transfer was eventually completed on 8 January for a record-breaking fee of €15 million or R$63 million, making it the largest transfer in the history of Brazilian football.
On 25 February 2022, de Arrascaeta extended his contract with Flamengo until 31 December 2026. De Arrascaeta, after showcasing his skills by scoring twice for Uruguay in the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, earned his debut for the senior team in a friendly match against South Korea in September 2014. He continued to impress and was selected for Uruguay’s squad in the 2015 Copa América.
In a pre-tournament friendly against Guatemala in Montevideo, de Arrascaeta netted his first senior international goal in a convincing 5-1 victory. Fast forward to 2021, he was once again included in Uruguay’s Copa América final squad. The year 2022 brought more success for de Arrascaeta as he scored both goals in a crucial 2-0 triumph over Ghana in the last group stage match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
