Harris Teeter was ranked No. 34 among the “Top 75 Retailers & Wholesalers” for 2012 by Supermarket News, which was based on $4.3 billion in sales for the 2011 fiscal year. On July 9, 2013, The Kroger Company announced that it would pay $2.5 billion to acquire Harris Teeter Supermarkets. Harris Teeter closed the sale on January 28, 2014, maintaining its brand, logo, and Matthews headquarters.
In 1969, The Ruddick Corporation, a subsidiary of The Bourgeois-Dickson Family, acquired Harris Teeter. The new owners sold alcoholic beverages for the first time. Harris, a devout Southern Baptist, continued to oppose the sale of alcohol even after the merger.
