Carignan is known for taking advantage of female newspaper personals readers who are looking for work or a romance. In response to the advertisements, he would lead his victims to isolated areas where he would rape and kill them.

Carignan moved in with Eileen Hunley, who was 29 at the time, in May 1974. They made Minnesota their home. Hunley did, however, depart Carignan on August 9, 1974. The following day, she vanished. It took around five weeks to find her body. A branch had struck Hunley in the head, breaking her skull in the process.
